A guide to brush types

A guide to brush types
Broad Canvas

If your chosen art discipline is painting, then your cherished collection of brushes: some new, some crusty, some twisted into new shapes, but always an extension of yourself. The variety of brush sizes, shapes and materials that are available can sometimes only add confusion to the process, taking away the pleasure and immediacy of actually painting.

A brush is typically made up of a handle, a crimp which holds the metal ferrule, which holds the brush bristles.

Here are a handful of different kinds of artist paint brushes which are available for you to use.

Round Brushes

The round brush has bristles that taper to a pointed tip making them very useful for detailed brush strokes.

Flat Brushes

The flat brush is used to spread paint quickly and evenly over a surface.

Bright Brushes

Bright brushes, although similar in shape to that of flats, have a shorter stiffer bristle. Particularly useful when wishing to employ thick paint styles like impasto.

Filbert Brushes

Filbert brushes are flat brushes with a domed end. They allow good coverage and the ability to perform some detail work.

Angled Brushes

Angled brushes, like the filbert, are very versatile and can be applied in both general painting application as well as detail work.
